The recent Coronavirus (COVID-19) has shaken the entire world in ways that we could have never seen coming. From air travel to the film industry, people are finding themselves without an income, while others are having to change the way they work. So, how does this affect Esports?
To start, the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational has been moved, and dozens of other events, such as several Overwatch League matches. As people being to secluded themselves inside their homes, there has never been such an interesting opportunity for Esports to thrive.
Although many of these events have been cancelled, Esports is of the few entertainment segments that has an opportunity to thrive. With the NBA officially cancelling any immediate games, the franchise will lose millions of fans, dollars, and support, simply due to the fact that the players must be present in order to play.
Unlike traditional sports, the Esports industry can thrive anywhere, even without competitors being in the same room. Although events have been cancelled, this gives an opportunity to the industry to show how resilient the sport can be!
As events are being cancelled in person, many of the events are continuing to be held and watched virtually. Not only that, but in many schools across the nation are able to continue to have practice for their teams, since they can practice virtually. The next question on everyone’s mind is, is how will Esports be affected after the virus epidemic has spread. Many think things will go back to normal, but the more likely answer is that we will never be the same again.
This means that the entertainment industry will continue to further invest into the industry, as the negative cash flow effects of the virus are only a fraction of what traditional sports will see throughout the coming months. What about streamers?
Overall, streamers already work from home, and now could see potentially even larger viewership, as people are stuck at home, people may want to listen/watch their favorite personalities, as there is only so much daytime TV and Netflix that someone can watch. Are you currently struggling with making ends meet?
This may be your time to start streaming and make your passion a reality! Choose a game, get involved; who knows, this could be the day you make it big! So, what does this mean for those of you wanting to help the industry grow? Watch your favorite streamer! Buy that extra piece of merchandise! Get that extra game you’ve had your eye on! Now is the time to help illustrate the benefits and growth of this completely untapped industry.
